save the children uk<br>save the children is the leading uk charity organisation working to create a better world for children. we work in over 50 countries (including the uk), helping children in the world’s most impoverished communities.<br><br>save the children uk’s work is underpinned by our commitment to make a reality of the rights of children, first spelt out by its founders and now enshrined in the un convention on the rights of the child. save the children uk’s global organisational plan over the next five years identifies four key objectives which are:<br>*health - access to quality local health services<br>*freedom from hunger - local safety nets to reduce malnutrition<br>*education - access to and completion of quality, inclusive basic education<br>*protection - access to, and quality of, local and national protection systems<br><br>save the children uk in china<br>save the children uk relocated its china programme office from hong kong to yunnan province in september 1995. in 1999 the main representative office relocated to beijing to enhance advocacy. in addition to the beijing director’s office, scuk china programme offices are located in yunnan, tibet, xinjiang and sichuan. <br><br>as one of the few child-focused international organisations working in china, save the children uk addresses the needs of the most marginalized children and young people through direct interventions, training programmes, research and advocacy work. we are working to support work in improving access to and quality of basic services for minority children, hiv/aids, and children without family care and protection.<br><br>sichuan programme<br>since the sichuan earthquake of may 2008, scuk has been working in sichuan province to respond to the needs of children. through its office in chengdu, scuk has built a programme focusing on child protection, education and health interventions. responding to changing needs in the earthquake affected areas is the immediate priority of scuk, but a long-term programming need has been identified in sichuan. disaster risk reduction activities are now being piloted, other existing work expanded, and networks with government enhanced. it is envisaged that scuk will maintain a long-term presence in sichuan, eventually expanding its focus beyond the earthquake, both geographically and thematic.
